Roscommon Community College beat a competitive Castlerea side in round 1 of this year’s Connacht First Year Boys ‘C’ Championship. RCC were slow to get going and were a goal down after 5 minutes with Castlerea dominating in midfield. Gradually our half back line of Mikey O’Brien, Leo Gately and Aaron Flaherty became more dominant and it was this line which was the foundation for our victory. Some well taken points from Evan Donnelly, Daniel Gillooly and Eoghan Gilleran saw us level with Castlerea at the break, 1-4 to 0-7.
After the restart we again started slowly and Castlerea within a minute had drawn level. They went a further two points ahead and RCC were struggling to get out of their own half. The key moment in the game was a marvellous run by Aaron Flaherty through the middle of the Castlerea defence and blasted over the bar. It seemed to reenergise the RCC players. From the kick out Keelen Feeney fielded, evaded several would be tackles and lobbed the keeper to go one point up. Castlerea always looked dangerous and it took two fantastic saves from Matthew Shally to preserve our lead. With five to go Aaron Garvey kicked a hopeful ball into the Castlerea square which caused confusion and Sean Curley drove the loose ball to the net to finish the game as a contest.
There were many excellent performances on the day. Our full back line of Cathal Warde, Aaron Gormley and Lorcan Rudden were tenacious throughout. Our half back line were excellent from start to finish. Adam Gately and Caio Mulryan da Silva tried hard in midfield, the half forward line, Stephen Smyth, Aaron Gately and Eoghan Gilleran kicked some nice scores while our full forward line of Daniel Gillooly, Evan Donnelly and Keelen Feeney ensured we got goals. However, it was our goalkeeper Matthew Shally who was man of the match with a commanding performance between the sticks. Well done lads.
