TY and 5th Year History students visited NUI, Galway on Wednesday last to engage with the Breaking the SEAL (Student Engagement with Archives through Learning) Programme. This project focuses on connecting second level students to the archival material, primary sources, and collections of the Hardiman Library at NUI Galway.
Students were treated to seminars that explored how to test the validity and reliability of primary sources as well as identifying what can be learned from them.
The next stage of the project is to use these skills to form a short essay on a topic of their choosing which will help them immeasurably with their Leaving Certificate projects. This will be published and stored in the library after a ceremony in May.
The day was also a wonderful chance for students to experience campus life in NUI, Galway as they sat for a cup of coffee in the University canteen and got a peek into the library they may be sitting in very soon!
