25th October 2018
On Monday last, 22nd October, Roscommon Community College came up against Roscommon CBS in the Senior B School Final. The game took place at 12:30pm in Hyde Park in front of a wonderful crowd of students and teachers from RCC. RCC, against a strong breeze, won the first score of the half after three minutes. RCC spurned a number of goal chances in the early stages which could have proven costly by the end of the game. Ten minutes in, Roscommon CBS achieved their first goal of the game. As the half progressed RCC were two goals down and struggling for scores. Fortunately, Michael Staunton kept the team in touch with some tough frees and the team went in at half-time 2-4 to 4 points. Roscommon Community College burst out of the traps after the break and two minutes later achieved a tremendous team goal scored when Cian O’Brien palmed into the net from close range. RCC and Roscommon CBS traded points throughout the next five minutes before Roscommon CBS raced through to put five points between the teams. This did not kill RCC’s momentum. RCC senior players began to show real leadership with Seán Trundle, Diarmúid Treacy and Adam Bracken all making great plays in attack and defence. Seán Trundle scored 1-1 to bring Roscommon Community College back to within one point. Roscommon CBS hit back with a point to increase their lead before Kyle Kelly buried a goal to put Roscommon Community College up by one. However, RCC, were a little complacent and Roscommon CBS raced down the field and scored a goal of their own instantly. Luckily, there was still life left in RCC and moments later Seán Trundle won the ball and left his man for dead on the 45m line. He burst through the heart of the CBS defence and rocketed a ball to the top corner of the net. This skilful run positioned Roscommon Community College into the lead with a two point advantage as the whistle drew for full time. Congratulations to the team and their coach Mr Killoran, a great day for Roscommon Community College.
