7th March 2019

5th Year students were delighted to visit Heat Merchants in Athlone on the 26th February.  This site visit was part of our partnership with Heat Merchants and The Business in the Community Skills at Work Programme.

The Business in the Community Skills at Work Programme matches local businesses with schools to give students a unique insight into the world of work.  There are a number of sessions including site visits, CV and interview workshops and mock interviews, which provide the students with an opportunity to consider careers and further study options available to them.

Heat Merchants are Ireland’s leading supplier of heating, plumbing, tiles and sanitary ware.  They are a fully Irish owned company with the main business support office and distribution hub located in Athlone. There are 32 Heat Merchant branches and 11 Tubs and Tiles branched nationwide and a Technical Services team based in Balbriggan.

On arrival we were welcomed by Heat Merchant’s Managing Director, Alan Hogan and Human Resource Director, Suzanne Devlin.

Alan gave an overview of the company and then students were split into four groups.  Each group spent time with employees and learned about a day in the life of that employee. They also had a site tour and got to see and experience the working world.

This was an invaluable experience for our students and we would like to extend our thanks to Alan Hogan and his team in Heat Merchants. We look forward to our next session.
