The Skills at Work programme is promising to be one of the most valuable real life learning experiences for our fifth year Business students. The students were delighted to welcome Suzanne Devlin, Heat Merchants Group Human Resources Director and Kate Wickenden, HR Generalist, to the school on Tuesday 5th March where students benefited from a CV and Interview workshop. This workshop was followed by students receiving a choice of job descriptions and person specifications to which students chose their preferred job. The Business in the Community link helps to introduce students to real life career decisions. Students were at this point in the programme communicating directly with the company’s HR Department by selecting their desired position and finalising preparation for their interview which took place on Thursday 28th March at Heat Merchants Group, Head Office in Athlone.

Students interviewed for their chosen position as HR Assistant, Pricing/Product File Assistant, Sales Assistant, Warehouse Operative, and IT Support Analyst. The nerves were the same as for anyone going for a job interview. Some feedback from the students included, “I’m delighted I did that interview, I was so nervous and nearly backed out but I’m so glad I went through with it. The feedback from the interviewers at the end was really helpful”. (Jamie)

“The feedback on how I explained a negative when on work experience was really helpful. I need to remember to state previous work experiences in a positive way at my next interview”, (Kyle)

A huge thank you to the Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) organisation and the management and staff of the Heat Merchants Group for being part of this educational journey, from all the senior cycle Business students and their teachers at Roscommon Community College.
