In our Maths Department we aim to provide a quality academic and practical education for all our students suited to their needs and abilities in a warm, caring and friendly environment.
We wish to develop a sense of interest and enjoyment in the learning of maths and instil in our students an understanding and appreciation of the importance of maths in everyday life and in furthering their education.
Aims & Objectives
- To develop mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding needed for continuing education, life and work.
- To enable learners to see connections within mathematics, between mathematics and to other subjects, and between mathematics and its applications to real life
- To learn the fundamentals of problem solving and to apply these principles to everyday life
- To enable students to deal with abstract teaching and to present solutions in a practical way
- To promote students confidence and competence in using mathematical knowledge, language and skills
- To further their powers of written and oral communication
- To inculcate in students a positive attitude towards maths
- To prepare students for their Junior and Leaving Certificate mathematics exams
- To prepare a firm foundation for later studies
Overview of Programmes and Levels
The Senior Cycle caters for students in the 15 to 18 year age group.
Mathematics at Senior Cycle builds on the learning at Junior Cycle and develops mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding needed for continuing education, life and work. Through their study of mathematics, students develop a flexible, disciplined way of thinking which enables them to solve problems in mathematical and real world contexts.
As well as a Transition Years Maths Programme, the syllabus is provided at three levels at RCC – Higher, Ordinary and Foundation level and is also assessed at these levels. Students will take two examination papers at each level.
The Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate Mathematics syllabus comprises of five strands:

We believe that students’ knowledge and understanding of Mathematics is enhanced by taking part in a number of extracurricular activities.
An online learning hub, with a goal of creating an accessible place for people to be educated. The website generates problems based on skill level and performance to go along with the content. Students in RCC are encouraged to further develop their learning and understanding through Khan Academy.
Irish Maths Teachers Association Junior Maths Quiz
The Junior Maths Competition is held for 1st Year Students since 1994. It consists of a school round where multiple choice brain teasers are answered within a 40 minute period. Results are sent back to organiser Michael Moynihan and based on results, students are invited to a regional final.
Pi Day 14th March
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Various activities and challenges are run in RCC to mark this annual event.
John Hooper Medal for Statistics
A statistics competition run by the Central Statistics Office CSO, which encourage students to:
- Work as a team
- Investigate real questions using data
- Use their calculation and graphical skills
- Interpret statistical results
- To develop skills in written communication.
Students compete for certificates, ribbons trophies and an overall district trophy for the winning MATHletes challenge team and their school.
Maths Week Ireland is an all-Ireland celebration of Maths and is a partnership of over 50 groups - universities, institutes of technology, colleges, museums, libraries, visitor centres, professional bodies - any group that sees the importance of maths and the importance of promoting maths. Maths Week in RCC promotes, awareness, appreciation and understanding of maths through a huge variety of events and activities.
