Staff and students at Roscommon Community College recently marked World Book Day 2017 with all staff sharing details of their favourite titles with students. Staff displayed their chosen title on the classroom door, engaging students in further discussion and leading to a growing awareness of new titles which students might like to add to their repertoire of texts. Surprisingly enough, one of the most widely read authors proved to be Harper Lee with the titles “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Go Set a Watchman” proving very popular amongst staff. “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a timeless tale of turmoil and romance, was also a popular read. We hope that our findings will encourage students to be a little braver with their book choices and to take a chance on a new title or genre instead of, to paraphrase Gatsby “beating on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past”.
