Debating

The debating club is going from strength to strength in RCC, with the senior debating team currently preparing for the Concern national debating league which starts in October. Debating helps to develop key skills in public speaking, as it allows pupils to evaluate arguments and make decisions based on logic and evidence. Our pupils have grown in confidence since they started with the club, and we are excited about how they can develop these public speaking skills even further.

2023 was a busy year for the Debating Club in RCC, with our pupils doing themselves proud in several tournaments. The highlight of this was the MACE Debating tournament hosted by the University of Galway between January and March. Two teams from the school entered the competition, with the team consisting of Kayla Joyce and Emily Dixon qualifying for the final which took place in a packed Kirwin lecture theatre on the university’s famous concourse. Kayla and Emily did themselves proud, proposing the motion “War is never Justifiable”. They spoke clearly and confidently, putting forward some excellent arguments for the motion. Although they didn’t win, they were highly commended and will no doubt return stronger next year.Emily Dixon participating in the schools debating tournament at NUI Galway
