17th November 2023

On the 8th of November, six students represented Roscommon Community College in the Gael Linn Irish Debating competition, which took place in Roscommon Community College. This competition promotes the Irish language by giving students the opportunity to debate against other schools through the medium of Irish.

Our Junior Irish debating team, which consisted of three 2nd year students: Tom Óg Reddington, Rebecca Trimble and Aideen Pearce, battled out against Meánscoil Muire Gan Smál Ros Comáin and Meánscoil na Trócaire, Ballymahon, in a very exciting debate in relation to reality television.

Congratulations to our Junior debating team, whose excellence secured them a place in the next round of the competition! They will now progress onto the next round of the competition representing Roscommon Community College in the coming weeks.

Our Senior Irish debating team, which consisted of 5th Year students Cian Escosio, Nathan Mac an Bháird and Conor Pearce faced tough competition against Meánscoil Muire Gan Smál Ros Comáin, Meánscoil na Trócaire Ballymahon and Scoil Mhuire Strokestown in an extremely high standard debate. Well done to all participants in the Senior category, who displayed an excellent standard in what was a very enjoyable debate for all. Commiserations to our Senior team who narrowly missed out on a spot in the next round of the competition.

Thank you to Gael Linn and School management for enabling this competition to take place in our school, Irish teachers Ms Muldowney and Ms Madden, and also a big thank you to student volunteers who helped out on the night.
