RCC 2-6 – Carigallen 3-9

On Wednesday the 17th of January the RCC senior ladies football team took on Carigallen in the Connaught D quarter final. Earlier in the year the girls topped their group which meant next up was a place in the quarter final v Carrigallen of Leitrim.

Carrigallen started off the stronger team but two super saves by goalkeeper Shauna McDermott kept RCC in the game. As the first half went on RCC began to settle into the game and raised the white flag on numerous occasions. Carigallen were a very strong side with experienced footballers up along the spine of their team. Megan Flynn worked tirelessly in the half back line sweeping up the ball on numerous occasions and driving up the wing. Andrea Fallon and Zoey King worked well together up front keeping the score board ticking over. Carrigallen went in at half time with a 9-point lead.

From the throw in at the start of the second half, RCC set down a marker that they weren’t going to give in. They won the throw in and drove at Carigallen’s back line but unfortunately hit the crossbar. There was no luck on our side. The girls continued to work hard with Sophie Cox, Hollie McDermott and Katelyn Shally leading from the back line. Lyndsey Gibbons and Mairead Lohan clocked up a lot of millage in midfield while Heather O Sullivan and Eabhanna Sheridan got on the score board in the second half.

RCC were making a comeback scoring 1-2 within 5 minutes, but it was not enough to win the game. The game ended with Andrea Fallon, our top scorer, with 1-3 from the 2-6. We wish Carigallen the best of luck in the semi-final.

A special mention must go to our 6th year girls who togged out for RCC for their last time. We would like to thank them for all the time and dedication that they have given to RCC ladies football over the past six years. You have done RCC very proud.
