Roscommon Community College drama students recently took part in the preliminary rounds of the prestigious Transition Year Drama Competition, held at Mullingar Arts Centre last week. This annual event, hosted by Cork County Council, Cork ETB, and the Briery Gap Theatre, aims to provide young people with a platform to showcase their talents in the performing arts while fostering teamwork and creativity on stage.
RCC students embraced the challenge of performing an adaptation of Act One of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The cast skilfully brought to life the eerie and sinister presence of the witches, the theme of kingship through the characters of Duncan and Malcolm, and the ruthless ambition that drives Macbeth towards regicide, influenced by the manipulative Lady Macbeth. Their compelling performance transported the audience back to 11th-century Scotland, creating a gripping theatrical experience.
The students’ dedication and enthusiasm were evident, and their hard work was met with positive and constructive feedback from the competition’s adjudicator. Now, the cast and crew eagerly await the results to see if they have qualified for the All-Ireland final at Cork Opera House in March.
