In a time of rapid social change, the study of Home Economics is very relevant to the present and future social, creative and management needs for living that are so fundamental in preparing every young person for the challenges and opportunities which they will meet in the course of their lives. Home Economics provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for living as individuals and as members of a family.

Junior Cycle Home Economics

The specification for Junior Cycle Home Economics focuses on developing students’ understanding and skills to achieve an optimal, healthy and sustainable life through engaging in various Learning Outcomes across three inter-connected strands:

1.  Food, health and culinary skills
2.  Responsible family living
3.  Textiles and craft

The Junior Cycle Home Economics Learning Journey can be mapped out as follows:

1st Year:

·       Engage with the Learning Outcomes across the three strands.

2nd Year:

·       Engage with the Learning Outcomes across the three strands.

·       Complete Classroom-Based Assessment 1: Creative Textiles. 

3rd Year:

·       Engage with the Learning Outcomes across the three strands.
·       Complete Classroom-Based Assessment 2: Food Literacy Skills Brief.
·       Practical Food Skills Examination.
·       Final Written Examination.

Assessment  

The Final Assessment takes place during 3rd year comprises of a practical and food skills examination and a written examination both issued and marked by the State Examinations Commission.
