2nd December 2022
Congratulations to Seán Allen, Mairéad Lohan and Tommy Morris on their successes at the National SciFest Awards held in the Marino Institute of Education, associated College of Trinity College Dublin, on Friday 25th November 2022.
Seán was presented with the National SciFest Irish Science Teachers Award (ISTA) for his project entry entitled ‘An investigation into a novel alternative to synthetic fertilisers for a future of sustainable agriculture in Ireland.’ Sean investigated the use of a more sustainable, cost-effective fertiliser as a replacement for synthetic granules. He discovered that waste milk and digestate are a good alternative for 10-10-20 in overall grass growth and percentage dry matter of grass.
Mairéad and Tommy were overall winners of the National SciFest Social Science Award with their project entry entitled ‘An investigation into improving the recovery process of adolescents when moving from the Sympathetic Nervous System to the Parasympathetic Nervous System during times of stress.’ Mairéad and Tommy discovered that stress reducing techniques such as grounding and breathing techniques are twice as likely to reduce stress levels in adolescence, if they understand the science behind moving between the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.
Thank you to their teachers, Ms Glancy, a former SciFest champion, Ms O’Reilly, Ms O’Neill, Ms Lohan and all of the science department in Roscommon Community College for their support of the students in their endeavours.
