Transition Year

This is a highly prestigious award that affords students the opportunity to learn new skills and develop an understanding of the importance of good citizenship and health and wellbeing.
Our students are also given the opportunity to take part in the Leadership for Life Programme. This is an exciting programme that enables young people to develop the skills and qualities necessary to be effective leaders, as well as challenging them to use these skills for the betterment of society.
The Leadership for Life programme sets out to empower young people to make a positive difference to their community through practical actions and projects. Throughout the course of the programme, young people learn the core concepts of leadership and gain skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, self-awareness etc. The programme sets about developing the leadership capabilities and potential of young people and gives them an opportunity to harness their skills and attributes to contribute to their society in a fun and encouraging environment.
The programme aims to enable young people to develop the skills, inspiration, vision, confidence, and action plans to be effective leaders and to empower young people to make a positive difference to their society through the practice of effective leadership.
Our TYP is highly structured and delivered in a similar style to the Senior Cycle Programme. It allows for independent, self-directed learning where critical thinking and innovation is encouraged and developed.
The programme in our school focuses on four distinct areas:
- Continuation of the core subjects (assessed as normal each term)
- Subject sampling for the Leaving Certificate Programme
- Transition Year specific modules and subjects
- Once off calendar events
It is important that students take on a mature and responsible attitude to their TY Programme together with an awareness that “you will only get out of the programme that you put in”.
