Roscommon Community College is proud to announce our continuing engagement with the Department of Education’s FCÁT/CLIL initiative for English medium Post Primary schools. FCÁT/CLIL (Foghlaim Chomhtháite Ábar agus Teanga/Content Language and Integrated Learning) is a Department of Education led pilot project aimed at supporting the provision of other curricular subjects through the medium of Irish in English-medium settings. CLIL is a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both language and content. The development and implementation of this project is advised by experts from various third level institutions.

Roscommon Community College was one of only two schools in Ireland to begin initial engagement with this project last year where CSPE and SPHE were trialled for a four-week period with one first year group. This year, we will be engaging in the learning and teaching of Religious Education with two first year classes, 1B and 1C, for an eight-week block.

Last month Mr Ó Ceallaigh, Ms Spellman and Ms Kerrane undertook training for this exciting initiative where Mr Ó Ceallaigh gave a presentation on our engagement with the initiative to date for other schools beginning to undertake the project. We are delighted to also have a group of TY students on board to assist as Cúntóirí Teanga in the delivery of this pilot.

FCÁT/CLIL improves motivation and knowledge in both the Irish language and the subject as well as cognitive skills such as higher-order and critical thinking skills. It also develops cultural awareness, knowledge, learning and communication strategies. We are very excited that our students will be some of the first in the country to experience this new opportunity. We are very proud of the positive attitude and strong culture of Gaeilge within our school. Labhair í agus mairfidh sí!
