French
We attend a French film screening at the Roscommon Arts Centre, on an annual basis.
The French Theatre group visit our school each year. Our students take part in the play and find the experience invaluable.
We are also linked to College Sainte-Marie in Melun, near Chartrettes, our twin town. The French and Irish students regularly correspond in their own language. This link has enhanced the language-learning experience for our students.
A French exchange is also in place, whereby our students can stay with a French family in the Chartrettes area and greatly enhance their French.Their correspondant then returns to Ireland at a later date to improve their English and sample Irish culture.
The GRETB provides a language scholarship towards the cost of a course at the Eurolanguages college. On their return to school, students are totally fluent in French.
French Exchange November 2016
During the October midterm break a group of our French students – together with their teachers Ms. Farrell and Ms. Connelly – took part in a language and cultural exchange programme in Fontainebleau, France.
The RCC pupils spent six days in the picturesque region South East of Paris with their exchange partners who are all pupils of le lycée Francois Couperin. The group took part in a variety of excursions and activities whilst in France including a visit to Disneyland Paris and a day of sight-seeing around the French capital. The students enjoyed a boat trip on the Seine and a guided visit of l’Orangerie museum where they encountered Monet’s famous water lilies series amongst other great pieces. They also visited some of Paris’ most loved and world –renowned sites such as le Louvre, la Tour Eiffel, l’Arc de Triomphe and les Champs-Elysées.
Our students experienced at first hand a taste of the French educational system as they spent a day attending classes with their partners in le lycée and even got to sample French boxing during PE! The trip proved an invaluable experience in terms of language enrichment. The students even shocked themselves as they realised just how much French they spoke and learned while immersed in the culture and language. RCC will welcome the exchange partners to Roscommon in the coming year for the return journey.
