Leaving Cert English students recently attended a dynamic production of William Shakespeare’s King Lear produced by the Gaiety School of Acting at the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone. This tragic play, renowned for its exploration of human nature, power, and family relationships, was brought to life with a modern twist in staging and costume design, making it particularly engaging for a young audience. The director used a minimalist set, allowing students to focus intensely on the characters’ emotional journeys and Shakespeare’s language. After the performance, a Q&A session with the cast and director allowed students to gain insights into the production process and character interpretation.
Overall, the production and subsequent Q&A session provided an enriching experience for the students, deepening their understanding of the play’s themes and characters, and offering a fresh perspective that will help them analyse and respond to the play in their forthcoming exams.
