RCC first volleyball outing for 2024 year took place October 2nd where our Senior Ladies Volleyball Team travelled to Ballinasloe to face Ard Scoil Mhuire, Ballinasloe, Merlin College, Galway, and Presentation College, Athenry. With no team at risk of being knocked out at this stage of the competition, the focus for the day was to get game time, practise set skills and become familiar with playing as part of a team.
With 28 senior girls training since September, the teams were divided into two teams – RCC Yellow and RCC Blue. RCC Yellow faced Ballinasloe Green and Presentation College, with RCC Blue going up against Ballinasloe White and Merlin College.
RCC Yellow appeared to start slow and having had no game time since last October, the nerves were present. However, as the day progressed, their confidence and sense of teamwork thrived. Having lost to Ballinasloe and Athenry, it meant RCC Yellow would face Merlin College in their last battle of the day. A thrilling match followed, with both teams showing great determination and drive. In the end, a tiebreaker was forced to decide, with RCC Yellow coming out on top with a 15-13 victory.
On the neighbouring court, RCC Blue’s talent remained consistent throughout the day. Displaying their superb serving, victorious volleys and deadly digs, they easily overcame both opponents, which resulted in them facing Ballinasloe Green, who dominated their earlier games. With both teams comfortably reaching the top on their respective sides, it was hard to say which way it would go. A magnificent battle ensued between the teams who put their bodies on the lines for each point. The first game kept everybody on the edge of their seats as nothing more than 2-3 points separated the teams. Unfortunately, for the RCC Ladies, it was Ballinasloe who took the first game after a thrilling 28-26 finish and with that, the Galway girls took their confidence into the next game, defeating the Rossies 25-13.
The players had a fantastic day and will benefit tremendously from all games played. They look forward to their next outing, which will take place after the midterm break. Placement in the top position on that day will enable them to progress to the next round.
