On Saturday last, students and staff of Roscommon Community College came together to celebrate Global Rossie Day, an annual event dedicated to recognising the exceptional achievements of the “Rossies” – people from County Roscommon – at both national and international levels.

The celebration was marked by a range of recognitions, with special attention given to the school’s Transition Year (TY) students, who have excelled in Drama in 2024. The students proudly took home All-Ireland Drama Awards in the prestigious Briery Gap TY Drama Festival 2024, winning both Best Set Design and Best Acting Duo for Donata Roberto and Caileann Sheridan’s incredible performance. These accolades reflect the hard work, creativity, and talent displayed by the students, who have been supported by their dedicated teachers in honing their craft.

Ms. Keena, the school’s principal, also accepted an award on behalf of past student Gerard O’Hara, who has made waves in the field of Engineering. Gerard will represent Ireland at the upcoming World Skills event in Dublin on the 25th and 26th of September, competing at the highest level in his chosen field. Ms. Keena expressed the school’s best wishes for Gerard as he is preparing for this prestigious competition, which is known for showcasing top talent from across the globe.

In her remarks, Ms. Keena shared her pride in the students’ impressive accomplishments, highlighting the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success. She also took the opportunity to thank the teachers who have been instrumental in nurturing students’ talents, both in academic and extracurricular activities.

“We are incredibly proud of all our students, whose achievements reflect their perseverance and commitment,” Ms. Keena said. “Our staff works tirelessly to support and guide them, and it is truly heartwarming to see the results of their collective efforts.”

The event was a heartening celebration of local talent and success stories, providing inspiration to all who attended the event, reinforcing the strong sense of community spirit that underpins Global Rossie Day.
