Hard luck to our senior boys’ soccer team who had an unlucky defeat at the hands of Tullamore College last Friday in the West Leinster Division 3 final. The game was played in perfect weather conditions at Athlone Town FC Stadium. RCC fell behind after only 5 minutes but regrouped and settled into the game. The turning point of the game came in the 35th minute when RCC got a penalty and the chance to equalise. Unfortunately, the penalty was saved and 5 minutes later Tullamore went further ahead with a fortunate own goal. RCC regrouped at halftime, but it was to no avail as 3 minutes into the second half Tullamore went 3-0 up when a header from a corner found the back of the net. RCC never gave up though and pulled a goal back straight away to make it 3-1 with 30 minutes to play. The RCC players dominated the next 25 minutes of the match with Enzo Bueno, Kian Mulligan and Izdrio Vargas all going close to getting a 2nd RCC goal, but it wasn’t to be. With RCC sending everyone forward to try get a goal back Tullamore scored their 4th goal with the last kick of the game. The game finished 4-1 which was harsh on the RCC players who gave it their all on the day but just came up short. A big thank you to the all the 6th year students who played their very last game for the school. The 6th year students were Brian Keegan, Brian Mannion, Dylan Treacy, Izidro Ribas, Eugenio Neto, Luka Finneran, Kian Mulligan, Conor Harris, and John Paul Devaney and on behalf of the school we would like to thank them for having shown real dedication and commitment to RCC soccer teams over the last few years. Finally, a special thank you to Mr Deering and Mr Li for managing and coaching the team this year.
