Senior English students from RCC had the unique opportunity to attend a special screening of the acclaimed film ‘Small Things Like These ‘at the local cinema. The film, starring renowned actor Cillian Murphy, is a powerful adaptation of Claire Keegan’s celebrated novel. Set against the evocative backdrop of rural Ireland, the story delves into the poignant and dark history of the Magdalene Laundries.
The screening was a visually rich and immersive experience that captivated the students. For 6th year students who are studying the novel as part of their Comparative Study, seeing the story unfold on the big screen brought new dimensions to their understanding of the text. For 5th year students, it served as a pre-reading activity, allowing them to engage with the story before delving into the novel in class. This initiative effectively taps into students’ active learning skills, helping them engage with the material in a more profound way. English teachers noted that the cinematic portrayal of the novel’s themes and characters offered students a deeper appreciation of its narrative and historical context.
A thoroughly captivating and thought-provoking experience was enjoyed by students and teachers alike. A special thanks is extended to the staff of Roscommon Omniplex for their assistance on the day.
