Roscommon Community College 4-19 Scoil Muire and Padraic Swinford 1-09The Connaught Juvenile D Final between RCC and Scoil Muire agus Padraig, Swinford was played last Thursday in Dr Hyde Park. On what was a glorious day for football, RCC put on their best display of the year to continue their unbeaten run and be crowned Connaught Champions. The game started at pace with RCC opting to bombard the Swinford full back line with long ball after long ball, to great effect. 2 goals and a few points were scored inside the first ten minutes with Luke Shally, Cormac Naughton and Marc Shally all contributing excellently. Swinford then got a foothold in the game and put our defence under pressure but the ever reliable Pierce Fannon, David Glancy and Aaron Connolly defended stoically when called upon. Nathan Flynn made an excellent penalty save in the first quarter hour to make sure the momentum did not turn away from the RCC lads. The defensive moment of the half came when Jack Lally and David Glancy double teamed one of Swinford’s brilliant forwards and blocked his shot down right on the half time whistle. It was this tenacity and determination that ultimately proved vital in the winning of the game.
On the restart of the second half Swinford notched off a couple of points but with the help of a skillful chip up by Sean Fannon, RCC kept the umpires busy. RCC kept the Swinford management guessing with lots of rotations, Lewis Smyth ending up at full forward and creating chances in there. Cormac Naughton rounded off his hattrick from the penalty spot and Marc Shally got the goal his play duly deserved finishing with a personal tally 1-5 from play on a day when he was unplayable. This was a real squad effort all year and that was very apparent on the day as all those that entered the field of play made huge contributions. All that was left to do was for captain Pierce Fannon to lift the cup and be officially crowned Connacht champions. This panel were exceptional all year; they were unbeaten, they put in a massive effort at training and on match day and the success was richly deserved. Well done to all.
